Our Confession of Faith
The United Brethren Confession of Faith was officially adopted by our movement in 1815. It was carefully crafted to reflect the basic doctrines of the Christian faith found in the Christian scriptures. This has allowed great freedom in non-essential beliefs while uniting many people in the essential, core beliefs of the gospel, both in their generation, and across the generations. This understanding of who God is unifies us as United Brethren members.
You can read the official Confession of Faith here and other theological statements here. Below is a version of our Confession of Faith in contemporary language.
God
There is only one God. At the same time, He is a three-in-one, or triune, God—the Father, the Son (Jesus), and the Holy Spirit.
Jesus Christ
Though a man, Jesus was fully God. He was born of a virgin, died on the cross, rose from the dead, and ascended to heaven. Someday, He will return.
The Holy Spirit
We believe in the Holy Spirit; He is God, and was sent to us after Jesus returned to Heaven. Every believer should receive and live by the Holy Spirit
The Church
Believers were made for God and for one another. Together they make up the Church and represents Jesus on earth.
The Holy Bible
The Bible is the Word of God. It alone tells how people can enter heaven.
The Salvation
A blood sacrifice is required to remove sin. Christ’s death accomplished that for everyone. Through Him, we can receive eternal life. To be a true Christian, a person must believe in Christ, repent and be forgiven of his sins, and obey Christ.
The Christian Ordinances
We believe every Christian should be baptized and participate in communion (the Lord’s Supper).
